The sport of soccer is played by a number of people throughout the world. Many players are now turning to playing soccer on the beach during the summer months for continued conditioning & training. Instead of simply working on their tan, soccer players are taking to kicking the ball around as an alternative to cross training. Those that are not near a beach are choosing to utilize community volleyball courts to create the same beach experience.
Those residing in Brazil have participated in beach soccer for years to work on their skill, improvisation, and physical conditioning. The Copacabana beach has been the site for Brazilian soccer leagues for all to watch while enjoying the sun, sea, and sand. Beach soccer is now played in 75 countries and participated by men, women, and children alike. Internationally renowned players including Eric Cantona of France, Michel and Julio Salinas of Spain, Ramario, Junior, and Zico of Brazil have all assisted in making sand soccer one of the fasting growing sports.
Playing on sand offers the player conditioning at a different level than grass. The sand inhibits movements and jumping that creates a field where one will have to work twice as hard. Since the beach game is a lot more deliberate, the sun and heat will fatigue your body quicker. The cross training will reinvigorate a soccer player in preparation for the upcoming soccer season. The sand offers up more resistance than the hard ground notably to the muscles in your feet, calves, and hip flexors. The sand will load up a soccer player’s quads, hamstrings, and glutes. By training on the sand, one will see an improvement in their soccer speed.
By participating in sand soccer, one will increase their endurance levels since jogging in sand requires more quad and hamstring work because your legs sink down into the sand which will require one to push against the ground in order to propel the body forward. Hip flexor muscles will become stronger when sprinting on the sand since one is not sinking as much as one would if jogging. Soccer players will improve upon their balance playing on sand and will improve upon their thought process, since in the sand, one cannot maneuver around with the ball as one can on the grass.
The soccer ball used in the sand is a bit lighter but still is a size five. The colour of the ball is brighter so it is easily visible. The ball comes at a high speed and at all angles. Playing on the sand requires a player to watch the ball a lot longer in order to adjust for the last second bounces that can come due to the differing angles. Ultimately, playing on the sand will cause less soreness on the body since there is less impact and your joints will feel better since there is less pressure on them versus playing on grass.
